(The libretto consists of the Gospel accounts of the Resurrection or post-
Resurrection story interleaved with other passages from the New
Testament, the liturgy of the church and sacred poems by Spenser,
Vaughan, Herbert and Thomas Aquinas. The "Easter Story" is melodious
from beginning to end with many arresting chords, modulations and
leitmotifs. The moods, sounds and styles change with the texts and there
is a teasing inter-play of concord and discord. Andrew Edwards is a
devoted admirer of a wide range of past composers - not least
Purcell, Schubert, Schumann, Wagner, Strauss, Elgar, Debussy,
Stravinsky, Bartok, Poulenc, Messiaen and Shostakovich - and this new
score includes echoes of the sound worlds we associate with each of
them).

friends in the St John's church hall.

Purcell, Schubert, Schumann, Wagner, Strauss, Elgar, Debussy,
Stravinsky, Bartok, Poulenc, Messiaen and Shostakovich - and this new
score includes echoes of the sound worlds we associate with each of
them).
The performance will be followed by a party for performers, patrons and
friends in the St John's church hall.
